How to Use a Baitcasting Reel

We’re not sure of the exact reason, but there are a lot of intiidation factors among newbie anglers about baitcasting reels. Although baitcaster is not the ideal approach for a novice, that’s not a rocket science whatsoever.

However, we want you to overcome the doubts and fears regarding how to use baitcasting reel. And that’s what drove us to come up with an entire article on it.

Enough of the intro. Let’s dive into the main section.

A Brief on Baitcasting Reel Technology

Baitcasting technology is the next level fishing tactics. These reels are little more complicated compared to spinning reels. They come with far more versatility as well.

There are a number of moving parts in the system. Such as braking system, tension knobs and so on. If you’re a beginner in this game, these might reach you some hardship at the beginning.

How to Use A Baitcasting Reel

We’ve divided the process of using a baitcasting reel into six different steps. Here you go-

Step 1: Set the Breaking System Right

Breaking system is kind of a pre-requirement for any baitcasting reel. It controls the rotation of the spool whenever it’s needed. And in most of the cases, it is of centrifugal type braking system. However, some rods also have a magnetic braking system as well.

Step 2: Adjust The Braking System

Once you’re done with locating the braking system, it’s time to adjust it. You can adjust it in two ways-

  • By pushing the interior levers toward the rod.

  • By pushing the braking levers away from the center.

Either way, brakes will be engaged or disengaged. Make sure that the chance of backlashing stays minimum throughout the process.

Step 3: Adjust and Test The Tension Level

An important function of the whole baitcasting reel is to control the level of tension that’s going to the spool. And to do that, we use controls named tension knobs which is located on the same side where the handle is located.

At this step, adjust the tension knob by tightening it. If you turn it clockwise, it will tighten, if you rotate otherwise, the tension will be released. Based on the weight of bait you are using, you should find the right tension level and tighten the knobs accordingly.

Once done, test the level of tension and keep it adjusting until the bait falls gently without any backlash.

Step 4:  Grip and Release The Baitcaster Line

Grab your dominating hand on the rod and put your thumb right on the spool release button. For proper casting, you need to learn how to disengage the spool smoothly.

However, start releasing the line now. Make sure the line is about 10-12 inches hung from the tip of the rod.

Step 5: Release the Spool

This is the final step and here you have to release the spool with the help of the spool release button that you’ve held in the previous step. Make sure to have firm control over the button and release exactly what you have to.

That’s it. Now, start casting with the baitcasting reel and enjoy your hours in fishing!
